Civil & Human Rights in The Gambia, An Educational Perspective with Dr. Saja Taal, February 26th

Screening of "Fuel", February 26th, Fireplace Lounge

Showing of the film FUEL
Tuesday, February 26th, 8:30pm in Fireside Lounge
Brought to you by the Eco-Reps & The Environmental Club

Josh Tickell’s stirring, radical and multi-award winning FUEL may be known by some as the “little energy documentary,” but in truth, it’s a powerful portrait of America’s overwhelming addiction to, and reliance on, oil. Having been born and raised in one of the USA’s most oil producing regions, he saw first-hand how the industry controls, deceives and damages the country, its people and the environment. After one too many people he knew became sick, Tickell knew he just couldn’t idly stand by any longer. He decided to make a film, focusing both on the knowledge and insight he discovered, but also giving hope that solutions are within reach. A ‘regular guy’ who felt he could make a difference, he spent 11 years making his movie, showing himself – and others – that an individual can indeed make a difference http://www.thefuelfilm.com/

The Justice League presents "Taking Action: Becoming an Ally", April 1st

Facilitators: Faith Yacubian and Rachel de Simone
Description: What does being an ally mean? Who decides who is an ally? Is an ally different than being a person of compassion and acceptance? How does being an ally impact social justice efforts?
Together, we will discuss the multiple definitions and contexts of the word ally. We will look at the history of and present day discourses of ally identity and its relationship to social justice and civic responsibility. In doing so, we will examine the process through which ally identity, as a means towards achieving equity, is developed and is made applicable to your leadership roles or professional studies.
Date and Time: Monday, April 1, 2013 from 3:30pm-5:30pm
Location:  Ireland 217

The Justice League presents "Eating Animals, Interlocking Oppressions", March 11th

Facilitator: Adam Rosenblatt, Assistant Dean for Global Engagement/Assistant Professor in the Core Division
Description: The idea of "intersectionality" or "interlocking oppressions" asks us to look not just at racism, sexism, or any other single form of inequality, but rather at the interaction between different forms of identity and marginalization. This idea has become increasingly influential in scholarship and social justice advocacy. Yet even as we begin to understand these new complexities, one boundary around conversations about justice tends to be left unquestioned: the boundary between human and non-human. This workshop is about non-human animals and justice. It is not a slideshow about the horrors of factory farming; rather, it explores the connections between how we think about the animals we eat and other issues of social justice: feminism, race, and genocide. Who is rational? Who is intelligent? Who feels pain, and who cannot? All of these categories are applied to animals on a daily basis, just as they historically have been to women, blacks, Native Americans, and many other groups. The workshop will introduce attendees to recent scholarship on the interlocking cultural objectification in which women are depicted as pieces of meat, meat is sold through images of available women, and meat-eating is the only way to be a "real man" (Carol Adams). It will also describe how racial ideologies and programs of extermination have often justified themselves by marking off certain people as animals (Joanna Bourke, Richard Rorty, Jonathan Safran Foer). The presentation concludes with a group discussion of an excerpt of  Art Spiegelman's award-winning graphic novel Maus, which makes the unexpected choice not to "humanize" Jewish Holocaust victims but rather to depict them in the animal form in which the Nazis described them: as rodents. The workshop will end with ample time for questions and discussion.
Date and Time: Monday, March 11, 2013 from 3:30 – 5 pm
Location: Morgan Room

Location: Ireland 206

The Justice League hosts "Beyond the Gender Binary", February 11th

Facilitator: Nicole Holtz, Area Coordinator & Jenna Roy, ‘13
Description: An icebreaker will be selected to allow participants to get to know one another and to begin working as a team.  Viewing the first 20 minutes of the documentary Transgeneration, participants will begin to learn about common issues/life experiences of people who identify as transgender.  Reflection time will be provided after the film followed by a group discussion.  We will then discuss sex, gender identity and sexual orientation as separate self-aspects that are continuum concepts rather than categorically-based. Through our dialogue and the use of a power point we will discuss the use of inclusive language and provide tools to use when acting as an ally to the transgender community.
Date and Time: Monday, February 11, 2013 from 3:30 – 5:00 pm
Location: Ireland 114
